After clinching first place in round robin
CHARLOTTETOWN – The Kathy O’Rourke rink from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex has earned a berth in the championship game of the 2014 provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
O’Rourke, a Summerside native who throws second stones and calls the game, scored four deuces en route to an 8-3 win over Shirley Berry’s foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club and Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside in Friday night’s fifth draw.
The Peter MacDonald-coached O’Rourke rink completed round-robin play at 4-0 (won-lost). That secures first place and a berth in Sunday’s final to determine P.E.I.’s representative at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal, Que., from Feb. 1 to 9.
O’Rourke, who throws second stones, is joined by Robyn Green, who throws fourth stones; Meaghan Hughes, who throws third stones; lead Tricia Affleck, and fifth player Stefanie Clark,
Berry, who is 2-1, is alone in second place.
Friday night’s other game had Lisa Jackson score two in the 10th end to outscore defending-champion Suzanne Birt 9-7 in an all-Charlottetown match. The result left Jackson at 1-2 and Birt at 0-3. Kim Dolan (1-2) of the Charlottetown Curling Complex had the evening bye.
O’Rourke will have a bye in the final round-robin draw on Saturday at 2 p.m. Berry will take on Birt while Dolan and Jackson will clash.
If a tiebreaker is needed it will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m., with the semifinal on Sunday at 2 p.m., followed by the final at 7 p.m.
If no tiebreaker is required, the semifinal will go Saturday at 7 p.m., and the final will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m.
In Friday afternoon’s action, O’Rourke scored three in the seventh end to close out the scoring in a 7-1 win over Jackson while Dolan stole a single point in the seventh and three more in the eighth to build an 8-4 lead en route to handing Birt an 8-6 loss.
