CHARLOTTETOWN – The first two games of the 2014 P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts required extra ends.

The Kathy O’Rourke rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex counted a deuce in the extra end to defeat clubmate and defending-champion Suzanne Birt 8-6, and Shirley Berry counted a single point in the 11th end to edge Kim Dolan 7-6. Both O’Rourke and Berry had last-rock advantage in the decisive ends.

The Berry rink is listed from the Cornwall Curling Club and Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, and Dolan curls out of Charlottetown.

Draw 2 is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m., with Berry taking on Lisa Jackson of the Charlottetown Curling Complex and Dolan facing O’Rourke. Jackson had a bye in the opening draw as this year’s provincial women’s curling championship has attracted five teams.

The winning rink will represent P.E.I. at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal, Que., from Feb. 1 to 9.
