CHARLOTTETOWN – The Scotties Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s curling championship, and the inaugural “Future Scotties” event both begin Thursday and wrap up on Sunday at the Charlottetown Curling Complex.
The defending Scotties champions, the Suzanne Birt rink, is back, along with four other teams, skipped by Shirley Berry, Kim Dolan, Lisa Jackson and Kathy O’Rourke. All teams curl out of the host Charlottetown Curling Complex, with the exception of the Berry foursome, which is from the Cornwall Curling Club and the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.
The 2014 championship team advances to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts at the Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal, Que., from Feb. 1 to 9.
Round-robin draws for the provincial Scotties are Thursday at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, and Saturday at 2 p.m. Opening ceremonies go Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
Tiebreakers, if needed, go Saturday at 7 p.m., and, if required, Sunday at 9 a.m.
The second- and third-place teams advance to the semifinal, which will go Saturday at 7 p.m. if there are no tiebreakers, or Sunday at 2 p.m. The winner of the semifinal will then face the first-place team in the final, which takes place Sunday at 2 p.m., if no tiebreakers, or at 7 p.m. if a tiebreaker ia necessary.
The “Future Scotties” is a new developmental event for female curlers who may one day compete in the Scotties.
Competitors from the Pepsi provincial junior women’s curling championship were invited, and four teams will be competing. They are skipped by Meghan Ching and Emily Keen from the Cornwall Curling Club, Kaleigh MacKay and her Crapaud/Montague team and the host club’s Lauren Moerike rink.
“Future Scotties” participants will be invited to the Scotties dinner, which precedes the championship, on Wednesday evening, and the opening ceremonies, and will be paired with a Scotties team at these events.
The “Future Scotties” was set up to expose the younger teams to the Island’s premier event for women’s curling. Game times for the Future Scotties round-robin event are 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday.
