The Holland rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex won the championship eight to five over defending champions, the Tyler Smith rink from Montague.

Holland held on to outlast a tough Tyler Smith rink from Montague, the defending junior champions.

The Holland rink got off to an early lead scoring two in the third end and three more in the fourth and seemed to be cruising.

Smith came back for a triple in end number five to pull within two.

Holland answered with two in the sixth end and a single in the seventh to rebuild the lead to eight to three.

Smith continued to pick away at the Holland rink lead with singles in the eight and ninth ends to pull within three.

The Smith foursome made it interesting in the final end and was poised to take the lead.

The Montague rink was sitting three when Holland’s mate, Tony Nabuurs, made a crucial double take out to seal the win.

Holland credited the win to his team’s consistent play.

“The boys came out really strong and we were all playing really nice,” he said. “All of our hits were very good. We played our game and it ended up working for us.”

Holland was pleased to grab an early lead but knew the Smith rink wouldn’t go down easy.

“It was nice to get the three in the fourth and the two in the sixth,” he said. “It really helped.”

“That was quite a nice shot by Tony, the skip said of his mate’s takeout shot in the final end. “It was very nice right up the broom.”

Holland and his team will represent P.E.I. at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships in Liverpool, N.S., beginning Jan. 18.

This is the first year this squad has been together and it’s Holland’s second trip to the junior championships.
