Berry top women's rink
SUMMERSIDE – A total of 20 teams from P.E.I., New Brunswick and Nova Scotia competed in the Island Petroleum cashspiel here at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club over the weekend.
The cashspiel was originally scheduled to conclude Sunday afternoon, but due to the weather forecast it was decided to make it a two-day event, with the championship games on Saturday night. All games were shortened to six ends on Saturday.
The Malpeque Bay Credit Union-sponsored rink of Marc LeClair, Aidan Downey, Darrell Thibeau and Roland Richard from the host Silver Fox stole their way to victory on Saturday night.
LeClair and his teammates stole three in the last end to defeat Bryan MacPherson’s rink from Halifax, N.S., by a 4-3 score.
That win gave LeClair a berth in the championship game against Leo Stewart’s rink from the Silver Fox.
The teams entered the last end tied, and LeClair stole a single point for a 3-2 victory.
The Stewart rink, sponsored by Slemon Park Hotel and Conference Centre, had earlier defeated the Charles DeBay team from Truro, N.S., in the other semifinal game.
Blair Jay and his team of Sandy Rundle, Charles Jay and Gerald Caissy defeated the Kevin Ellsworth team from Alberton to win the consolation.
The Silver Fox/Cornwall Curling Club team of Shirley Berry, Sandy Hope, Shelly Ebbett and Arleen Harris, sponsored by Yogi’s Food and Bar, defeated the previously-unbeaten Moncton, N.B., team of Shannon Tatlock, Leanne Richardson, Shelly Thomas and Lynn L. LeBlanc, sponsored by SunLife - Kevin R. Williams Financial Services Inc., in the women’s championship game. The final score was 5-3.
In the semifinals, Tatlock defeated the Gail Greene rink from Montague while Berry downed Vanessa Hamming’s Crapaud team in the other semifinal.
