MONCTON, N.B. – The Suzanne Birt rink stole a single point in the extra end to win the Lady Monctonian cashspiel at Curl Moncton on Sunday afternoon.
Birt took on the Kathy O’Rourke-skipped squad in an all-P.E.I. final. O’Rourke held last-rock advantage in the extra end, but the final stone was heavy resulting in a 3-2 victory for Birt in a matchup of two Charlottetown Curling Complex rinks.
Other members of Team Birt are third stone Shelly Bradley, second stone Michelle McQuaid and lead Susan McInnis. O’Rourke’s teammates are Meaghan Hughes, Robyn Green, Tricia Affleck and fifth player Stefanie Richard.
In the semifinals, O’Rourke defeated Sylvie Robichaud of New Brunswick while Birt beat Canadian senior women’s champion Colleen Pinkney of Truro, N.S.
Birt beat Christina Black and O’Rourke won over Melissa Adams in the quarter-finals.
The other P.E.I. rink in the event, skipped by Kim Dolan, also finished the round robin at 3-2, tied with Kelly MacIntosh and Sarah Rhyno in their pool. However, Dolan did not advance to the quarter-finals after draw-to-the-button results were compared.
Next up for the Birt and O’Rourke rinks is the Royal Lepage OVCA Women’s Fall Classic in Kemptville, Ont., from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3. A total of 24 teams will compete for a $15,000 total purse.
