Mustangs cap perfect season

MISCOUCHE - The Miscouche Mustangs capped off a perfect season Wednesday
afternoon.
The Mustangs built a 30-16 halftime lead and then held off the Summerside
Intermediate School Owls 47-43 in the gold-medal game of the P.E.I. School
Athletic Association midget 'A' girls' basketball championship. The Mustangs
finished the season 16-0 (won-lost), including a 14-0 regular-season resume.
"From the very beginning of the year, we played strong and worked hard
throughout the season," said Mustangs coach Katherine Olscamp.

In other games Wednesday, Montague defeated Kensington 49-44 in the boys'
gold-medal game; Miscouche defeated Souris 50-38 in the boys' bronze-medal
match, and Vernon River edged Souris 42-30 to win the girls' bronze.

GIRLS
Mustangs 47 Owls 43
At Miscouche Consolidated, Ellen Arsenault sank 13 points, tournament most
valuable player Emma Barlow added 12 and Abbey McQuaid had eight to lead the
Mustangs. Brianna Arsenault (16), Ashley Simmons (11) and Cassidy Campbell
(7) were the Owls' top point-getters.
Although the Mustangs took a 14-point advantage into the intermission, the
Owls outscored their hosts 16-3 in the third quarter to close to within
33-32. The Owls then scored 25 seconds into the fourth quarter to go in
front 34-33, but it was a short-lived lead as Miscouche went on a 9-0 run to
build a 42-34 lead.
"We put on a press and full-court pressure," said Olscamp. "Then we wanted
to run down the clock and make smart plays."

Vernon River 42 Souris 30
At Montague High, Monica Furness scored a game-high 20 points for Vernon
River. Rebecca Allen (9) and Bria Paquet (9) were Souris' top scorers.
Vernon River led 15-8 at the break.

BOYS
Montague 49 Kensington 44
At Montague High, a late Kensington rally fell just short.
Tournament MVP Joshua Black had 11 points and 24 rebounds while Jagger Acorn
had nine points to pace Montague. Aiden Harrington (11), Mitchell Bernard
(10), Ben Grady (9) and Dakota Bonnell (8) were Kensington's top scorers.
Montague led 26-23 at halftime.

Mustangs 50 Souris 38
At Montague High, Andrew Richardson scored 16 points and hauled in 24
rebounds to lead Miscouche. Carter Yeo (14), Chris DesRoches (8) and Daniel
Brown (8) were the other leading scorers.
Matthew MacIntosh (15) and Steven Mills (13) led the Spartans, who were in
front 22-21 at halftime.
