Landry, Curran, intermediate teams to be honoured

SUMMERSIDE – It will be a history-filled day at Queen Elizabeth Park in Summerside on Sunday.

The official dedication of the Legends Field monument and 2013 induction ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Legends Field is formerly known as the Baseball Field.

A new monument has been constructed opposite first base, and two well-known individuals and two teams will have their names unveiled as the inaugural Honour Roll inductees. They are Henry (Hank) Landry, the late John K. Curran and the 1947 and 1948 Summerside All-Stars that went on to win two provincial championships, one Maritime title and were finalists in another Maritime championship.

Mr. Shortstop

Landry, known as Mr. Shortstop, was a player, coach and manager from 1930 to 1968. He played on no less than three Maritime intermediate championship teams, and coached a junior team to the Maritime title.

Landry also worked with young players, passing along his extensive knowledge.

Love of baseball

It was Curran’s love of baseball that led him to attaching his firm’s name – Curran and Briggs – to the Summerside teams that won successive Maritime intermediate championships in 1949 and 50, and a Maritime junior championship in 1950.

He also supported the minor baseball program, providing for the services of the late Bob (Chick) Whalen to head up a Little League program in 1950. In 1951, Curran brought in the late John Carroll to continue that program for another 10 years as well as coach a junior team.

Cross section

The Summerside Intermediate All-Stars were a cross section of local players, Second World War veterans and Air Force players from the nearby RCAF Station in Summerside. They captured the imagination of all Prince Edward Islanders, and set the stage for other Summerside teams to follow.

A total of 28 players played on those two teams, which were selected from the Summerside Town League.

Midget game

A baseball game between two Summerside midget teams will follow the ceremony on Legends Field. The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony and midget game.

Nominations are currently being accepted for next year’s Honour Roll inductees.
