P.E.I. unable to protect lead at 18-under baseball ch’ship

MAGOG, Que. – P.E.I. was unable to protect an early lead in its first game here at the Baseball Canada national 18-under championship.

The Island representative jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but Manitoba rallied with four runs in the fourth inning and a three-run fifth capped the comeback. The final score was Manitoba 8, P.E.I. 6.

Matt Barlow of Summerside went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead P.E.I. offensively. Jay Oram of Summerside, Stephen O’Shea of Stratford, Darcy Affleck of Stanhope, Logan Gallant of Cornwall and Dominique Ryan of Charlottetown all had single hits for P.E.I., which committed four errors in the field leading to four unearned runs for Manitoba.

Brady Vandervelden of Shamrock started on the hill for P.E.I., and he gave up five runs (four earned) in 3 1/3 innings of work. Affleck relieved Vandervelden and was tagged with the loss. He allowed three runs – all unearned – in 1 2/3 innings. Kiersten Steele of Gaspereaux worked a scoreless sixth inning.

P.E.I. is scheduled to play its second game of the day against British Columbia at 3:30 p.m., Atlantic time.
