Winning pitcher Jason Daigle pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Metro Mudcats in the championship game of the Summerside Area Baseball Association midget tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Mudcats defeated the Bedeque Blue Jackets 6-4 at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Legends Field.
The Metro Mudcats scored a pair of insurance runs on back-to-back squibblers in which the batter beat the throw to first base with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Those two runs increased Metro’s lead over the Bedeque Blue Jackets to 6-3.
The Blue Jackets got one run back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, and had the tying run on base when the game’s final out was recorded.
The final score: Metro 6, Bedeque 4.
Earlier Sunday, the Blue Jackets pulled out a nail-biting 5-4 win over Morell-based Northside in one of two semifinals. Morell stranded the tying run on second base in the seventh inning.
In the other semifinal game, the Mudcats blanked the Summerside Team One Chevys 4-0.
