Third annual SABA Opening Day will feature NBSBL game

SUMMERSIDE – There will be an added feature to this year’s Summerside Area Baseball Association (SABA) Opening Day.

Brett Martin of the Summerside peewee AA team swings at a pitch during Thursday night’s practice at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Gordie Arsenault Field. The Summerside peewee AA team will be one of 23 Summerside Area Baseball Association teams taking part in the third annual Opening Day at QEP on Saturday.

The third annual event, which features all 23 SABA teams playing a game at Queen Elizabeth Park (QEP), is scheduled for Saturday.

“Each year we try to better this day,” said SABA president Gian Martinson. “The first Opening Day we had was great, there was lots of excitement at the ball field.

“The second year wasn’t as big and we were missing some of our AAA teams. Our thought during the winter was how do we make this day big again? How do we get everyone excited about being at the ball field?

“For us, we love being at the ball field, and want to bring other people into that.”

One vision SABA officials had that will hopefully add to the excitement is the addition of a New Brunswick Senior Baseball League (NBSBL) game to close out the day’s action.

Martinson and SABA board member Gary Barlow worked closely with the NBSBL and Charlottetown team officials over the winter to land a contest between the Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders and the Moncton Mets. The first pitch on Legends Field is set for 7 p.m.

All minor baseball players wearing their jersey and accompanied by an adult will be granted free admission.

“We want to get the kids out to the ball field,” emphasized Martinson. “It’s (NBSBL) great baseball and gives that blastball or pony kid something to look forward to when they are done of their minor baseball career. We think it’s going to be a nice topping to a fun day.”

Four fields in use

The day starts at 9 a.m., with all four fields at QEP in use. There will be a blastball game on the Hospital Field, a mosquito house league contest on the Gordie Arsenault Field, a mosquito AA match on the Very Important Volunteer Field and Summerside’s two bantam AA teams will clash on Legends Field.

“It is a fun day for kids and parents to be around the ball field. That’s what baseball is about – having fun, promoting baseball and we feel that’s what this day does.” SABA president Gian Martinson

The blastball and mosquito house league teams will play each other within their division. The A and AA teams up to peewee will all be playing teams from away.

“It is a fun day for kids and parents to be around the ball field,” said Martinson. “That’s what baseball is about – having fun, promoting baseball and we feel that’s what this day does.”
