CORNWALL – The 17-and-under P.E.I. Youth Selects’ baseball team will begin their season in late April.
The Youth Selects will be competing in the Canada Cup in Saskatoon, Sask., from Aug. 6 to 11, and will be made up of players born in 1997, 1998 and 1999. The team will also be permitted to carry two 1996-born players as overagers.
This team is not to be confused with the Island Midget All-Stars that will be participating at midget nationals in Quebec. The Midget All-Stars will be made up of players born in 1996 exclusively.
Dave MacIsaac was recently named head coach of the Youth Selects. Stephen LeClair, Jared Doyle and James Phillips will join MacIsaac on the team’s coaching staff.
The team will play a full schedule in the Kings County Baseball League (KCBL), but will not be participating in the KCBL playoffs.
Preparations for the season begin with an identification camp on the turf fields at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall. There will be five sessions at the ID camp, and there will be a small cost.
Those sessions, depending on weather and field conditions, are scheduled for Monday, April 28 (5:30 p.m.); Wednesday, April 30 (5:30 p.m.); Saturday, May 3 (4:30 p.m.); Wednesday, May 7 (5:30 p.m.), and Saturday, May 10 (4:30 p.m.).
The camp will be mandatory for potential players, with the exception of eligible players who are attending school out of province. Those players are asked to contact the coaching staff to indicate their interest.
