At Atlantic mosquito AAA baseball championship
RICHMOND – The St. John’s Capitals prevented the Richmond Red Sox from making it two straight wins at the Atlantic mosquito AAA baseball championship.
The Red Sox built an 8-3 lead after 4 ½ innings, but St. John’s rallied for eight runs in its half of the inning to take an 11-8 lead. The Capitals then retired the side in order in the top of the sixth inning to win its opener.
Shane Fordham (2-3, two RBI) and Steven Abbott (1-2, two walks) sparked St. John’s offence.
For the Red Sox, Austin Arsenault (2-2, walk) and Charlie DesRoches (1-1, two walks) were the top batters.
Devon Murphy earned the pitching win in relief while Parker Gallant was tagged with the loss.
It was the first game of the tournament for St. John’s, coached by former softball star Colin Abbott.
In other games Friday, the Fredericton Royals topped the Dartmouth Arrows 12-2, and the Red Sox edged the Charlottetown Royals 5-4 in the opener. Charlottetown was playing Fredericton in the final game of the day.
The tournament features a round-robin format, with the top two teams meeting in Sunday afternoon’s championship game.
