SUMMERSIDE -

SUMMERSIDE - The Halifax Braves are the champions of the Summerside Prodigy Sports Chevys/Causeway Bay Peewee AAA Classic baseball tournament.

The Braves downed Saint John, N.B., 10-4 in the championship game at Queen Elizabeth Park's Gordie Arsenault Field on Sunday afternoon. Halifax finished the three-day, 12-team tournament at 4-1 (won-lost) while Saint John went into the final undefeated at 4-0.

The Braves finished in a four-way tie with West Prince, Cornwall and Cole Harbour for top spot in Division 'A'. All four teams sported 2-1 records, with runs-per-defensive inning used as the tiebreaker. That resulted in Cornwall being awarded first place and Halifax second.

That meant the Braves faced the host Chevys in one of Sunday morning's semifinals. The Chevys and Saint John finished tied atop Division 'B' at 3-0, but Summerside was awarded top spot after the tiebreaker was applied.

In the semifinals, the Braves and Chevys were tied 3-3 after five innings. But a five-run sixth inning, keyed by Spencer Martell's two-run single with two outs, gave the Braves an 8-3 lead.

Matt Godkin earned the pitching win for Halifax while Matt Barlow suffered the loss in relief of Jed Noonan.

Nick Welsh went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Halifax's offence. Noonan (2-3, two RBI) and Jayden MacLean (1-2) were Summerside's top batters.

In the other semifinal, Saint John got by Cornwall 7-4.

No other game stats are available.
