Kensington-owned horse records fastest mile

SUMMERSIDE – It was the “Gilles Barrieau Show” here at Red Shores at Summerside Raceway on Wednesday night.

The veteran driver, known as the Maritime Magic Man, made four trips to the winner’s circle on a card dominated by the Lady Slipper Stakes for two-year-old fillies and the Joe O’Brien Memorial Stakes for two-year-old colts. Three of Barrieau’s wins came in stake races.

In the Lady Slippers Stakes, there were three $5,800 Grassroots events and two $11,700 divisions.

Dusty Lane Bria won the first Gold Division of the Lady Slipper Stakes in 1:59 flat. Kenny Arsenault drove for owners Ken Wilkie of Stratford and Larry Chappell of Marshfield.

Barrieau drove Jann Down to victory in the other Gold Division for the Downey Stables of Quispamsis, N.B. Time of the mile was 2:01.3.

Windemere Belle (2:02.4), Ubettowin (2:01) and Miss Oromocto (2:02.1) won the Grassroots events.


Camco Titan (1:58.2) and Jack Reader (1:58.1) won the two $10,800 Gold races for the Joe O’Brien Memorial Stakes.

Arsenault steered Camco Titan for the ownership group of Windemere Farms, John Howatt and Roger Burns of North Wiltshire, and Harris Johnston of Charlottetown.

The Lenny and Squiggy Stable of Stratford own Jack Reader, and Ken Murphy did the driving.

Ross Melvino (1:59.2) and Silverhill Blaze (2:02.1) took home the lion’s share of the $6,900 Grassroots races.

Fastest mile

Flaming Prince recorded the fastest mile – 1:56 – of the 14-dash program in a $1,400 pace in the evening’s finale.

A nine-year-old bay gelding by As Promised – Flaming Princess – Witsends Fiddle, Flaming Prince finished ahead of Roccos Calvallo and Life Savior.

Terry Gallant did the driving for Kensington owners Justin Campbell and Thane Mann, who also does the training.

Other winners

Other winners were:

Modern Girl (2:00), Bringhometheblue (2:03.1), Ok Chivas (2:01.4) and DBS Rosco (1:57.4).

Arsenault finished night with three driving wins while Gallant registered a driving double.

The total live wager was $19,701.

Live racing returns to Summerside Raceway on Wednesday, Aug. 27. Post time is set for 7 p.m.
