SASKATOON – The P.E.I. Scotiabank Reds picked up their third win in as many games here at the Softball Canada national under-18 girls championship on Friday.

The Reds defeated the Nova Scotia AAA team 7-1 to improve to 3-0 (won-lost) and secure a berth in the Co-op Division’s gold-medal game on Saturday at 8 p.m., Atlantic time.

Three teams – Manitoba Two, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan Two – are still in the running to take on the Reds in the final. The Reds beat Manitoba both in the round robin and in Co-op Division play.

“It’s going great,” Reds head coach Jeff Ellsworth said of his team’s play. “The girls are playing really well.”

The Reds, who finished round-robin play on Wednesday with a 1-3 (won-lost) record, moved to the Co-op Division playoff round for teams placing 16th and lower in the 22-team tournament.

Convincing win

Against Nova Scotia, Alyssa Fleming, who pitched a complete game, gave up just seven hits and allowed a first-inning run in recording the victory. Fleming walked four Nova Scotia batters and struck out seven.

P.E.I. scored its seven runs on 10 hits, exerting the most damage in a four-run third inning.

“It’s going great. The girls are playing really well.” Reds head coach Jeff Ellsworth

Laura Ready went 3-for-3, including a double and triple, at the plate and scored two runs to lead the Reds. Other top hitters were Kailey Koughan (2-4, run scored, RBI); Jada Yeo (1-2, two runs scored); Kaylan Ellsworth (1-2, run scored, RBI) and Emily Cairns (1-3, run scored).

Team efforts

Coach Ellsworth said what’s been great about the Reds’ play is there seems to be a different player stepping up every game to put the P.E.I. representative in position to win.

The Reds were actually right on the bubble to make the tournament’s top playoff division, but lost out on a plus-minus tiebreaker. Ellsworth noted the Reds actually placed sixth in hitting, scattering 36 hits through four round-robin games.
