CHARLOTTETOWN – Brett Butler has committed to the Holland Hurricanes for the 2014-15 Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) men’s volleyball season.

Brett Butler

A recent graduate of Colonel Gray High School in Charlottetown, the six-foot-four Butler was captain of the Colonels and a P.E.I. School Athletic Association all-star this past season. He was also a finalist for Volleyball P.E.I.’s under-18 player of the year.

“Brett was one of the top all-around players in the league this past season,” said Hurricanes head coach Joe Ryan. “I don’t think there was a position that he did not play for his high school team.

“He was a leader for his team on the floor and I’m looking forward to placing him on a team with players of high calibre, so he can continue to improve as a player.”

Butler agrees that the play will be more intense at the collegiate level.

“I think the biggest transition will be that hitting will be faster than high school and more consistent,” said Butler. “The calibre of play is higher in the league, so just the increased level of competition will be a big adjustment.

“My strengths include leadership, work ethic and attention to detail. I can bring all these traits to every practice and game.”

Butler played many positions in high school, but Ryan would like to position him at his strongest position.

“In high school, if Brett was in the back row he set,” said Ryan. “When he was in the front row he was then a hitter.

“I am glad to tell Brett that he does not have to worry about setting anymore; he can focus on the outside positions only.”

Butler is “very excited” to join the Hurricanes.

“I was able to watch a few games from last season, and judging from the returning players and the new recruits I believe that we can have a great season this year.”

The Hurricanes, the 2014 ACAA men’s volleyball silver-medallists, are the hosts of the 2015 CCAA national men’s volleyball championships in Charlottetown in March.

“I am extremely excited for our team to get the opportunity to see how we measure up against the best in country,” said Butler. “I can't wait to compete at such a high level.”
