The only coach in the Island Storm’s history is coming back.

Joe Salerno is returning to the National Basketball League of Canada squad’s sidelines this season, the team announced Tuesday. The Storm has lost in the final the past two seasons.

“I couldn’t be happier to know that I am coming back to the Storm for a fourth season,” said Salerno, who is also vice-president of player personnel. “We certainly have some unfinished business to take care of this season after coming so close to an NBL championship this past spring.

“I want nothing more than to continue and have a long and successful career here with the Storm, and hopefully bring a title back to the great fans we have here on the Island.”

Salerno becomes the longest tenured coach in league history and has the most wins (74) among active coaches. He has coached the team to back-to-back Atlantic Division finals with 30-plus wins the past two seasons.

Salerno shared the coach of the year honours in 2013 with Michael Ray Richardson and coached the Atlantic Division the past two years.

“We’re very excited to have coach Salerno back for another season,” said co-owner Duncan Shaw. “We think we’re able to recruit the high character players that we do because of that kind of stability. Joe is one of the bright young minds in the game and will continue to maintain our high standards on the court and in the community."

The Storm completed a very summer basketball camp in Charlottetown last week and has three more camps planned for this summer.

They are: Aug. 5 to 8 at Westisle High School, Aug. 11 to 14 at Morell High School and Aug. 18 to 21 at Three Oaks Senior High School. Camps are free and space is still available at all three locations.
