Action to take place on Water Street and Credit Union Place courts
SUMMERSIDE – Beach-style volleyball is returning to downtown Summerside.
The Summerside Recreational Volleyball League will hold the Lobster Festival beach tournament this weekend. Play begins on Friday at the Credit Union Place courts, and continues through to Sunday.
It’s been a number of years since the volleyball courts have been set up on Water Street, but that will change on Saturday as matches start there at 10 a.m.
All of the semifinals and crossovers on Sunday will be played at the Credit Union Place courts, with the action getting underway at 9 a.m.
A surge in entries has seen the number of teams grow from 23 on July 1 to 52 registered by Monday night’s deadline. Each team is guaranteed three matches.
“I started sending some emails to known volleyball players and as well using some of my rec. hockey contacts,” explained tournament organizer Aaron Doyle. “I starting getting a few responses, and then just this last couple of weeks it snowballed pretty good.”
Over 200 participants will represent teams from Summerside, Bedeque, Cornwall, Charlottetown, Moncton, Saint John, Shediac, Truro, Halifax, Dartmouth, Saint John, Fredericton, Sackville, Kensington, Wellington and Sherwood in six divisions of play all weekend.
A recreational volleyball league in Toronto has also shown an interest in the tournament, and it hopes to have some teams participate next year.
Major tournament sponsors are Greco Pizza, Frozu, Capt. Sub, Molson Canadian, Colours Signs and Printing, The Taproom and Doolys.
Sunday’s division championship matches:
Noon – men’s doubles; women’s doubles.
1 p.m. – women’s quads.
2 p.m. – co-ed quads.
3 p.m. – men’s quads; co-ed 6’s.
