CARDIGAN – A seventh-inning rally by the Nova Scotia 98’s spoiled a near perfect weekend for the P.E.I. RE/MAX Ravens.
The 98’s scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-3 win over the Ravens in the championship game of an under-16 girls softball tournament.
“The girls played excellent ball all weekend,” assessed Ravens head coach Mark Quinn. “We were competing against the top U16 softball teams in the Maritime provinces, and we are as good as anyone.
“Softball is a game of inches and with a couple of errors and missed opportunities at the plate, we were not able to pull off the victory on Sunday.”
The Ravens defeated the 98’s 9-1, Moncton Rebels 12-0 and Fredericton Twins 10-0 to go 3-0 (won-lost) in round-robin play, and then trimmed the under-18 Saint John Vipers 8-1 in a semifinal game.
“The team has been improving every time the players go out on the field,” said Quinn. “Our hitting was outstanding this weekend, generating 42 runs in five games.
“Defensively, we only surrendered six runs - unfortunately four of them were in the finals. Having tight defensive games with pressure are needed to prepare the girls for the Canadian championships, where every play is important.
“Obviously we would have preferred to come away with a victory on Sunday, but if we can learn from Sunday’s final, we will be better prepared for the nationals.”
The Ravens head to Lowell, Mass., this weekend to compete in a 30-team All-American under-16 tournament. They play two games Friday and three Saturday, followed by a single elimination playoff round beginning Sunday morning.
