Cheverie posts driving triple

CHARLOTTETOWN – It was a four-horse blanket finish over a sloppy track Thursday as Van Zant, with Ron Matheson driving, and Judge Jon, with Mike Stevenson in the bike, landed on the line together to win the  feature in a rare dead-heat at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The wild finish also included Every Day (Brian Andrew), who finished third, with Narragansett (Jason Hughes) fourth. A photo finish was needed. The time of the mile was 2:00.2 as heavy rain fell most of the night.

Matheson came right back in the finale to score with Artners in Crime to record his 999th career victory. The Charlottetown driver is only one win away from career milestone 1,000 and could get it on the weekend race schedule.

Thursday's card staged two trot classes with driver Walter Cheverie sweeping both races with JK Queen, owned by Joe Smallwood, Stratford; Norman Clarey, Charlottetown; and Pleasure Girls for owner Shelly Gass of Cornwall. Cheverie also drove Nobestbfor to victory for his third winner of the night.

The action shifts to Summerside on Saturday for the Atlantic regional driving championship. Post time is 6:30 p.m.
