Plans underway for busy summer

SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside Recreational Volleyball League (SRVL) began its third season of play here recently.

The six-on-six co-ed beach league plays its matches at the Credit Union Place courts, and is continuing to grow in popularity.

The league, which is open to any player regardless of age, gender or skill level, has had an increase in player registration this year. The league, which continues play until mid-to-late August, has expanded to six teams, with nine players on each roster. There are still a couple of openings available for players, and if interested email

League play takes place on Monday nights and Saturday mornings, with matches scheduled on the odd Wednesday.

The three-set matches that go to 25 points are self officiated. Teams must win by two points.

Busy summer

Along with league play, the SRVL is planning two weekend events.

Off-Island teams are being invited to the second marathon beach volleyball day. The all-day jamboree is scheduled for July 5. Four teams from Moncton, N.B., took part last year, when play went from noon until around 7 p.m.

“This year, we are looking at bringing Moncton over again with a few teams from Fredericton or Halifax,” said SRVL president Aaron Doyle. “It’s just a fun day playing the great sport against different teams from other areas.”

The SRVL, which will also host a tournament during Lobster Festival week on July 19 and 20, also hopes to participate in a couple of off-Island tournaments throughout the summer.
