CHARLOTTETOWN – Two well-known defencemen from Prince Edward Island will be joining the celebrity lineup for the 25th anniversary of the Special Olympics Festival.
Special Olympics P.E.I. announced on Wednesday afternoon that Stanley Cup winner Adam McQuaid of Cornwall and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League defenceman Ryan MacKinnon will be part of a luncheon at Credit Union Place in Summerside and a gala dinner and auction at the Delta Prince Edward in Charlottetown on Tuesday, June 24. The festival is the largest annual fundraising event for Special Olympics P.E.I.
Drafted 55th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, McQuaid now plays for the Boston Bruins, a team he helped win the 2011 Stanley Cup. A past supporter of the Special Olympics Festival, McQuaid has also donated an item to the event’s live auction, which will be revealed at the event.
MacKinnon is from Summerside, and was recently traded to the Charlottetown Islanders after three seasons with the Rimouski Oceanic.
McQuaid and MacKinnon join a growing list of celebrity guests confirmed for the Sports Celebrity Festival, including Gino Reda, host of TSN’s That’s Hockey; CFL Hall of Fame quarterback Damon Allen; Canadian Olympic curler Brad Gushue; Montreal Canadiens assistant coach Gerard (Turk) Gallant; Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman and captain Dion Phaneuf; Toronto Marlies goaltender Drew MacIntyre; actress Elisha Cuthbert, and Rachael Loggie, Special Olympics P.E.I. female athlete of the year.
Tickets for the luncheon and gala dinner are available by calling Charity Sheehan at (902)-368-8919.
