In Alberton on Sunday

ALBERTON – Three provincial female softball teams will play an exhibition series here at Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday.

“This is a great day for Island fastpitch,” said P.E.I. under-18 coach Jeff Ellsworth. “Any time you can bring the best in any sport together at all the different ages, it’s a real treat for coaches, fans and the athletes themselves.”

The provincial under-14 and under-16 teams will also participate.

“(The) season has been going very well,” said under-16 coach Mark Quinn. “We started off with a perfect 5-0 (won-lost) record and a tournament win at the Henry Kelly tournament in Moncton.”

The under-16 girls lost three exhibition games against the Nova Scotia 99 team last weekend, with two of those decisions decided by one run.

“It identified certain aspects of our game that we have work on, and we have started to address those things in practice,” said Quinn, who added Sunday’s games are an excellent chance for players from Alberton to play in front of a home crowd.

All three teams will represent P.E.I. at national championships in August. Ellsworth added it’s important for all three teams to work together.

Chris Halliwell coaches the under-14 squad.
