CHARLOTTETOWN – The Three Oaks Axemen emerged as champions of the recent Colonel Gray High School Frank Hughes Memorial tip-off softball tournament.

After dropping their opening game 2-1 to the Westisle Wolverines, the Axemen won their next three games to claim the season-opening event for P.E.I. School Athletic Association senior teams.

The Axemen defeated the Montague Vikings 14-1 in their other round-robin game, and then blanked the Colonel Gray Colonels 10-0 in the semifinals. That set the stage for an all-Prince County final against Westisle, which was won 15-3 by Three Oaks.

Winning pitcher Owen Arsenault tossed a six-hitter and fanned four in the final. Avery Arsenault was the losing pitcher.

Offensively, Matt Barlow (3-4, three runs batted in), Parker Harvey (2-4, three RBI), Chasse Gallant (2-3, two RBI), Zach Mallett (2-2, two RBI) and Max Morrison (1-3, three run homer) swung hot bats for the Axemen.

Arsenault also earned the pitching win against Colonel Gray, tossing a one-hitter, striking out five and displaying strong control in not issuing any walks. Isaac Pitre took the loss.

Barlow (2-4, triple, two RBI), Gallant (1-3, triple, RBI) and Jayk McClure (1-3, three RBI) were the leading hitters for the Axemen.
