Three Oaks Axemen and Avon View Avalanche win championship matches

SUMMERSIDE - Rain and mud set the stage for the finals of the 18th annual David R. Voye Memorial rugby tournament at the Three Oaks Senior High pitch, to the delight of players who reveled in the challenges.

The girls' match was claimed by the Avon View Avalance, of Windsor, N.S., over the North Nova Gryphons, of New Glasgow, N.S., by a score of 12-0. The boys' match pit the host TOSH team against Island rival Bluefield Bobcats, with the Axemen using home-pitch advantage to win 29-0.

“It was going to be a forwards’ game. We want to keep them in tight, and not be doing fancy ball plays. We just wanted to ‘smash, smash, strip the field’, “ described Avalanche coach Jim Bryan.

“It paid off because there wasn’t a lot of dropped balls,” like he expected there would be, considering the weather, he said.

Of the boys' match, TOSH coach James Voye was pleased with the outcome against thier 2013 season championship competition.

“The fact that we’re able to run our game plan in conditions like this, and not make handling errors, says a lot about the boys and how good they are as rugby players” Voye praised.
