SUMMERSIDE – The host Three Oaks Axemen and Axewomen have advanced to the semifinals of the 18th annual David Voye Memorial rugby tournament.
The Axemen blanked Northumberland from Alma, N.S., by a 34-0 count in one of three 5 p.m. starts on Friday. Meanwhile, at the same time, the Axewomen also posted a convincing 42-0 triumph over Northumberland, and the Montague boys won 14-0 over Cobequid Education Centre from Truro, N.S.
The Three Oaks and Montague boys both finished round-robin play at 2-0 (won-lost), setting up an all-P.E.I. semifinal on Saturday at 11 a.m.
With 11 girls’ teams entered, Three Oaks and Northumberland were the only two teams in Pool A while the other nine teams made up a trio of three-team pools. Thus, the Axewomen will play the winner of Friday evening’s game between Bluefield and Avon View in a semifinal game on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The girls’ final is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the boys’ championship set for 3 p.m.
Against Northumberland, Logan Plant (2), Alex Rose, Dan Fingler, Jesse Cameron and Aiden Smith scored trys for the Axemen. Cameron and Sebastien Roy-Garand chipped in with converts.
In the girls’ game, Carry McGuire led the Axewomen with three trys while singles were scored by Julie Campbell, Lauren Sheidow, Taran Price and Monica Arsenault. Price added a convert.
Dalton Kemp scored two trys to lead Montague past Cobequid. Cody Forrester had a convert.
