Hurricanes head coach Joe Ryan confirmed that Darcie Handrahan from Alberton will suit up with the Hurricanes in the fall. Handrahan is a product of the strong senior high program at Westisle Composite High School.
“If Darcie can be the player that he was back at Westisle in high school and at the Canada Games in 2009, we will be in tremendous shape,” shared Ryan. “Darcie will bring his experience and leadership to a group of players who may be quite young, but very talented. We will need to rely on Darcie to be a leader on this team.”
Handrahan is a six-foot-four left-side hitter, who was a two-time P.E.I. high school all-star, a starting member of the 2009 Canada Games volleyball team and was a very highly recruited player out of high school.
It’s a big year for the Hurricanes, who will host the 2015 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) men’s volleyball national championship in February at Holland College’s Centre for Community Engagement.
“With Holland College hosting nationals, it is a very exciting opportunity,” said Handrahan. “I can't wait to be a part of the buzz and anticipation leading up to the tournament.
“I'm proud to be a member of the ‘Canes and having the privilege of representing Holland College in a major event. I look forward to the start of training camp and having a successful season with the Hurricanes.”
Coach Ryan has his sights set on the best recruits available in preparation for the upcoming season.
“Over the past number of years, this program has evolved into a contender, and this coming season I feel we will have the talent to not only be a competitive host of nationals, but to compete hard in our conference and have a chance to go into the nationals as conference champions,” said Ryan.
