Racing returns to capital track for 2014 season
CHARLOTTETOWN – Miracle Matts went down the highway to win the feature event as racing returned to Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Saturday night.
Corey MacPherson drove Miracle Matts in the Race 9 feature for a purse of $2,000.
Owned and trained by Blois MacPhail of Cornwall, Miracle Matts left from Post 6 and made the front with fractions of 28.3, 59.1 and 1:29.4 before fighting off the pocket-sitting Tempo Seelster (Vincent Poulton) in the stretch to win in 1:58.4.
Tempo Seelster was second with Cambest Kisser (Jason Hughes) finishing third.
Abundaspin captured the open trot handicap in 2:02 for trainer-driver Harold Shepherd and owner Mikaela Lustic of Cornwall. Honeymoonisover (Mark Bradley) was second, with third going to Buckling Banbury (Corey MacPherson).
The season open went to Solid Performance in 2:03 for owner-trainer-driver Earl Smith of Hunter River.
Its Handsome Hank (Brian MacPhee) returned to the races after not competing since September of 2012 to finish second. Eyes Of Glory (Steven Shepherd) finished third.
The back-up pace went in Race 10 for $1,600 as Van Zant used off-the-pace tactics to win in 1:58.2 – the fastest mile of the night. Co-owner Ron Matheson was in the driver’s seat for trainer Jackie Matheson and co-owner Tom Clark of Charlottetown.
A newcomer to Charlottetown, Beckenbauer (Kenny Arsenault), finished second while Paphos (Marc Campbell) was third.
Campbell had a driving double on the card, winning with Better Wave in 2:02.3 and Silky Britches in 2:01.4.
Other winners were:
My Lucky Killean (Gary Chappell) in 2:01.4, Putnams Snap (Wayne Dunn) in 1:59.3, Bunny Mach (Hughes) in 1:59.4 and I D K (Poulton) in 2:00.
The total bet on the 10-dash card was $23,602.
