SLEMON PARK – Charlottetown athletes performed well at the under-16 Badminton P.E.I. age-group championships here at the Canadian Games Sports Centre recently.

The event featured a record turnout of participants from across the Island.

Tony Fei, David Pan, Alex McCloskey and Spencer Beaton took top honours in singles and doubles events.

In order to get to the final, Fei beat Connor McAulay, Bradley Norman and Own Hall. On the other side of the draw, Pan beat Logan MacDougall, Alex McCloskey and James Tweel to reach the final, where he played well but could not stop Fei from taking his second age-group singles title of the season 21-13, 21-10 over Pan in the final. Fei also won the under-14 championship two weeks ago.

Boys’ doubles

The boys’ doubles event featured some very tough matches. The four teams to reach the semifinals were Pan/Fei, McCloskey/Beaton, Hall/MacDougall, and Tweel/Mathurin Carr-Rollitt.

In the top half, Pan and Fei met McCloskey/Beaton and went to three games, winning the first 21-13, losing the second 18-21 and winning the third 21-18 to move into the final.

In the other semifinal, Hall/MacDougall played well but could not break through the excellent combination of Tweel/Carr-Rollitt, who won the match 21-13, 21-17.

The final between McCloskey/Beaton and Tweel/Carr-Rollitt was very tough. Tweel/Carr-Rollitt won the first game 22-20, McCloskey/Beaton came back strongly to win the next two games 21-11, 21-18 to take the 2014 boys doubles’ championship.

No girls’ events were held.
