HAMPSHIRE – The Charlottetown Aces took the title in Volleyball P.E.I.’s 16-under/18-under spring league tournament for the second week in a row.

The Hampshire Heat hosted the most recent tournament at Bluefield High School, and a total of seven teams from all five clubs participated.

The Montague Magic made their first appearance of the season, and added to the high quality of play throughout the tournament.

“Our Montague team won three matches this evening, which is more than we won all last spring,” said Montague coach Travis Murphy. “Giving the athletes a chance to train and compete in the spring certainly improves the quality come next fall’s high school season, and also helps our provincial program in the summer.”

Tournament format

The format featured a single round robin, and there were no playoffs. Thus, every match and point was important. It came right down to the last match between the Aces, who were 5-0 (won-lost), and West Prince Islanders, who were 4-1, to decide who would walk away with the title.

Once again, the Aces’ strong passing and attack was too much for the Islanders and all the other teams to handle as they finished the evening a perfect 6-0.

The Aces will host next week’s tournament at Colonel Gray High School on Wednesday. Play begins at 5:30 p.m. These weekly tournaments lead up to the Volleyball P.E.I. provincial finals at Holland College on May 2.
