ELMSDALE --The weather couldn’t keep messing up Volleyball P.E.I.’s 16U/18U boys spring league schedule. Six teams from four clubs participated in the club’s kick-of tournament at Westisle gymnasium recently. The tournament was hosted by the West Prince Islanders.
“If the first night is any indication, this should be an exciting season of club volleyball” said Hampshire Heat head coach and co-league coordinator Lynn Boudreau. “The level of play was up compared to the start of last spring and as the weeks go on, fans will be treated to some great volleyball action.”
Besides the Islanders and the heat, other clubs participating in spring league this year are Summerside Slammers, Montague Magic and Charlottetown Aces.
The Aces won out in the opening tournament. The Aces and the Heat both finished round-robin play with 4-1 records. The Heat beat the Aces 25-23 in round robin play but it was the Aces who prevailed in the 1-2 final. The Heat were up 22-20 with 30 seconds remaining in the 15-minute championship game, but the Aces managed to score two pivotal points before the final buzzer, setting up a next-point-wins scenario with the Aces scoring on their next serve.
The Haces, a team made up of additional Heat and Aces players, finished third in round robin with a 3-2 record and beat Islanders #1 (2-3) 24-14 in the third place match.
The Slammers and Islanders 2 both finished play at 1-4.
“We are looking forward to another great, albeit short spring season,” said co-league coordinator Peter Bolo. “This gives athletes another opportunity to play besides just the fall PEISAA season and helps with the summer provincial team programs, as well.”
The following are round robin results from the Tournament: The eat had wins of 27-17 over the Slammers, 28-19 over Islanders 2, 25-13 over the Aces and 25-23 over the Haces.
