CHARLOTTETOWN – UPEI is gearing up to celebrate its top student athletes today at the P.E.I. Brewing Company.

The awards gala will begin at 5:45 p.m. with a special ceremony to recognize the record-setting 73 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Academic All-Canadians, and the named award donors and recipients.

The Academic All-Canadians award, first introduced by CIS in 1988, recognizes students who have achieved an academic standing of 80 per cent or better while participating in their university's varsity teams. UPEI is celebrating the 73 out of 185 students who have received the CIS award - almost 40 per cent of the student athlete population at the university, a figure among the highest in Canada.

Some of the main awards to be presented include Team MVP and Rookies of the Year, Passion for Life (in memory of former student athlete Rene Ayangma) and the Outstanding Male and Female Athlete of the Year, among others.

The gala will be streamed online at 7 p.m. at www.austv.ca.
