ALBERTON -- The host Western Regals are already assured a berth in the Atlantic Midget AAA championship tournament’s championship final on Sunday. The Regals squeaked by their provincial rivals , the Mid-Isle Matrix 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Jacques Cartier Arena to go to 3-0 in the five-team standings.
The Regals have only one round robin game remaining and can finish no worse than tied for first. The only team that has a chance of tying them for first place is the Matrix. Their provincial rivals have two points but have two round robin games remaining on Saturday and can catch the Regals if they win both their games and the Regals lose their 11:30 a.m. game to the Bedford, NS Blues.
Mid-Isle played their first game of the tournament Friday morning, shutting out the Blues 3-0, but their loss to the Regals evened their record.
Western, who opened play on Thursday with a 3-2 overtime win against the St. John’s Marshalls, scored an 8-3 win over the Saint John Warriors Friday morning before meeting the Matrix.
In other games Friday the Blues and the Marshalls tied 2-2 and the Marshalls downed the Saint John Warriors 7-3. The Warriors and the Blues tied 2-2 Thursday night.
Current standings have the Regals in first with six points, followed by the Marshalls with a win, loss and tie for three points. The Matrix have a win and a loss for two points and the Blues have a loss and two ties for two points. The Warriors have two losses and a tie for one point.
Games Saturday have the Warriors playing the Matrix at 11 a.m., the Regals and the Blues at 1:30 and the Marshalls and the Matrix at 4 p.m.
Third and fourth place teams will meet for Bronze Sunday at 11 a.m., and the first and second place teams will go for gold at 1 p.m.. All games are at the Jacques Cartier Arena.
