ALBERTON -- The host Western Regals are already assured a berth in the Atlantic Midget AAA championship tournament’s championship final on Sunday. The Regals squeaked by their provincial rivals , the Mid-Isle Matrix 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Jacques Cartier Arena to go to 3-0 in the five-team standings.

The Regals have only one round robin game remaining and can finish no worse than tied for first. The only team that has a chance of tying them for first place is the Matrix. Their provincial rivals have two points but have two round robin games remaining on Saturday and can catch the Regals if they win both their games and the Regals lose their 11:30 a.m. game to the Bedford, NS Blues.

Mid-Isle played their first game of the tournament Friday morning, shutting out the Blues 3-0, but their loss to the Regals evened their record.

Western, who opened play on Thursday with a 3-2 overtime win against the St. John’s Marshalls, scored an 8-3 win over the Saint John Warriors Friday morning before meeting the Matrix.

In other games Friday the Blues and the Marshalls tied 2-2 and the Marshalls downed the Saint John Warriors 7-3. The Warriors and the Blues tied 2-2 Thursday night.
