SUMMERSIDE -- Two women’s rinks, Iva Griffin from the Western Community Curling Club and Tammi Cudmore from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, and Leo Stewart from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club are 3-0 in the respective women’s and men’s standings after Day One of The Dominion P.E.I. Provincial Club Curling Championships.
Griffin, whose team includes one-half of the defending champion rink, stole two points in the extra end Friday night against Crapaud’s Vanessa Hamming to win 8-6 and go to 3-0 while Cudmore scored a 10-4 win over Silver Fox’s Kim Aylward. Stewart made it three wins in a row with a 7-3 victory over Western’s Eric McCarthy rink.
Six Island curling clubs have each entered their men’s and women’s club jchampions in the provincial round-robin championship.
Following Griffin and Cudmore in the women’s standings are Kim Glydon, Cornwall; Gail Greene, Montague and Kim Aylward, Silver Fox, all at 1-2, and Crapaud’s Vanessa Hamming, 0-3.
Two teams, Phillip McInnis, Charlottetown and Matthew MacDonald, Montague, are tied for second in the men’s standings with 2-1 records. Eric McCarthy, Western, and defending champion Alan Inman, Crapaud are at 1-2 and Cornwall’s Mark MacDonald is 0-3.
Two more draws go on Saturday at 9 and 2 p.m., followed by a tie-breaker draw at 7 p.m., if needed. A second tie-breaker, if needed, goes at 9 a.m. Sunday. Otherwise the semi-finals will be played then, with the finals at either 2 or 7 p.m.
The top three men’s and top three women’s teams advance to the playoffs with the first place teams heading straight to the finals and the second and third place teams meeting in the semi-finals. The provincial champions will advance to The Dominion Club Curling national championships next November at the Mayflower in Halifax.
