Brown claims badminton tournament Triple Crown

CHARLOTTETOWN – Mark Brown was the dominant player in a recent Badminton P.E.I. tournament here at Birchwood Junior High School. 

In the singles semifinals, Brown defeated Chen Ni 21-7, 21-9 to advance to the semifinals while Travis Lacey defeated Cliff Lin 21-11, 21-12. Brown then won the final in straight sets – 21-14, 21-15.

On the other side of the draw, Aaron Baglole defeated Yu Chen 21-11, 21-12 to proceed to the semifinals. There, he battled Andrew Brown, who had advanced with his 21-7, 21-8 win over Paul Deveau. Although there were some great rallies, Andrew Brown won the match comfortably, 21-14, 21-16, to compete against his brother for the singles' crown.  

Mark Brown emerged as the winner in a close match – 21-17, 21-17.  

Sam Pan won the consolation finals with a tight 22-20, 13-21, 21-15 victory over youngster Tony Fei.

Women’s singles

In women’s singles, there were four competitors in a round-robin event. Nathalie Lefrançois went undefeated to emerge as the eventual winner. Her tightest match was with Pauline Hamlin – 19-21, 21-19, 21-15.  

Hamlin, Liz Burke and Karen Gallant each ended up with identical 1-2 records, but Hamlin placed second based on games won/games played. Gallant came third.

Doubles

Nine teams competed in men’s doubles. Travis Lacey/Aaron Baglole beat James Richardson/Nelson MacKinnon 21-9, 21-8 in the semifinals while Mark Brown/Andrew Brown won over Sam Pan/Yu Chen 21-8, 21-13. This set up the exciting and well-played final match.

The score flipped back and forth several times as play continued, but the Browns came from behind to take the match 17-21, 21-18, 21-19. Jarson Gong/Cliff Lin won the consolations with a final win over Shichao Wang/Chen Ni, 21-14, 21-14.

There were only two teams that competed for the women’s doubles crown, with Pauline Hamlin/Karen Gallant defeating Nathalie Lefrançois/Joanne McNeary 21-7, 21-8.

Mixed doubles

In mixed doubles, three teams played a round-robin format, with Mark Brown/Karen Gallant coming out on top with wins over Aaron Baglole/Pauline Hamlin 21-2, 24-22, and Paul Deveau/Liz Burke 21-2, 21-9. Baglole/Hamlin came second.
