ALBERTON -- Defending boys champion Alex MacFadyen has scored a bye into the 2014 championship final of the O’Conner Glass Curl P.E.I. Provincial Under 16 Boys Curling championship.
The Silver Fox rink defeated Devin Schut’s Cornwall/Charlottetown rink 9-4 Saturday afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club to wrap up round robin play with a 4-0 record. The top three teams make it into Sunday’s play-off round, and the top team goes directly to the championship final. Owen Collier and his Montague Curling Club team could create a three-way tie for third and final play-off spot with a win in tonight’s final round-robin game. A win by Alex Gallant’s Silver Fox rink would give his team sole possession of third place and negate the need for any Sunday tie-breakers.
While MacFadyen was sewing up first place in the boys division, defending girls champion, Lauren Lenentine and her Cornwall rink was nailing down the “B” qualifier with a 7-2 win over Charlottetown’s Lauren Moerike.
Also in the 5 p.m. draw, Donald DeWolfe from Cornwall locked up a boys semi-final berth, 12-2 over Alex Gallant, finishing second.
Sharing the ice with Collier and Gallant in the 8:30 p.m. draw are four girls teams fighting to secure the “C” and “D” qualifiers for Sunday’s play-off. Katie Worth is facing Kristie Rogers in a showdown between two Cornwall rinks, and Karlie Lewis from the host Western Community Curling Club is doing battle with Moerike.
