U16 boys, girls curling ch’ships start Thursday

ALBERTON -- The Western Community Curling Club in Alberton and Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary will be utilized Thursday at 7 p.m. for the first draw of the O’Connor Glass Curl P.E.I. Provincial Under 16 Curling championships. 

There are eight girls teams entered in a triple knockout competition which will finish with a Page playoff championship. Five boys teams will play in a round robin, with the top three teams advancing to the play-off round.

There is only one draw on Thursday. All draws thereafter will be played at Western Community Curling Club. Friday’s draws in Alberton are at 10 a.m., 2 p.m.  and 7 p.m. Play continues Saturday and Sunday and, if necessary, Monday.

Three members of last year’s under 16 girls championship team are back to defend their title. Lauren Lenentine, who played second stone on Rachel O’Connor’s winning team last year is skipping this year. O’Connor is mate and Breanne Burgoyne  returns as lead. The team has picked up Elly Whitney-Coulter at second.

Alex MacFadyen and Matthew MacDonald are back from last year’s winning boys team, still playing skip and second respectively. They’ve picked up a new mate, Tyler Smith and a new lead, Ben Gardiner.

Three members of last year’s Kaleigh MacKay runner-up rink are also back, MacKay Kaleigh Peters and Alyssa Wright.
