PEISAA senior AAA, AA basketball playoffs get underway

CHARLOTTETOWN -- The Bluefield Bobcats had too much outside shooting and dominated the boards to defeat the Kensington Torchettes 63-37 Tuesday in P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) Domino’s senior girls’ basketball quarter-final action.

Five three-pointers in the first half, three by Jordan Havenga, set the stage and Haley Wilting cleaned up the glass to lead the Bobcat victory. Wilting had 22 points while Havenga and Maria Walsh each added 18.

For Kensington, Emma MacLean had 11 while Cassidy Champion and Gwenyth Clark each had six.

The Bobcats will play the top-seeded Colonel Gray Colonels on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Holland College in Charlottetown.

In AAA boys, Three Oaks controlled the game and defeated the Bobcats 79-57.

Ty Wright was a one-man wrecking crew as he dominated play with 28 points. Tanner Mendoza with 15 and James Meek 13 also scored for the Axemen while Matt Dawson dropped 25, Jeremy Hertz and Nicole Jackson had 11 each for the Bobcats. Three Oaks plays No. 1 seed Charlottetown Rural on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Holland College.

Thursday’s other AAA games have Three Oaks and Charlottetown Rural girls at 4 p.m. and Colonel Gray and Westisle boys at 6 p.m.

In AA girls, Souris Spartans outdueled the visiting Three Oaks Two Axewomen 25-21. The Spartans led 10-8 at halftime. Julia MacAulay led all scorers with 16 and Meghan Stewart added six for Souris while Bethany DesRoches led the Axewomen with six points. Souris plays top-seeded Westisle at 6 p.m. Friday at Holland College.

In AA boys, fourth-place Three Oaks Two advances to play top-seeded Kensington at 4 p.m. after a thrilling 67-66 win over the visiting Montague Vikings.

Montague led 25-21 at half. Top scorers were Jacob Majcan with 18, Mitchel Henderson with 15 and Zack Mallett with 13 for the Axemen while Cameron Glover had 21 for the Vikings, Daniel Morrison added 16 and Tristan Dawson had 12.

Other AA Friday games include third-place Charlottetown Rural playing second-place Souris at 8 p.m. and No. 3 Montague Vikings playing No. 2 Colonel Gray at 2 p.m.
