Bluefield high hosts senior A
The PEISAA Domino's seniors have their turn at the chase for provincial basketball titles starting this week.
Monday and Tuesday night saw five quarter-final games to determine participants for the A title this week at Bluefield High and the AA and AAA titles at Holland College.
The league established the final rankings this weekend and the three divisions are set and ready to play.
Wednesday, Bluefield High hosts the A semifinals. Starting at 2 p.m. Bluefield and Morell women start the championship battles. Bluefield is led by point guard Keira Coady who is a strong creator on the offense and Cassie Doucette, their most aggressive player working hard on both offensive and defensive boards.
The Marlins rely on strong post play and scoring from Emma Drake and the ball-handling and shooting of point guard Katie Gallant and speedy Jacklyn Winters.
At 6 p.m., Charlottetown Rural #2 and Kinkora women do battle. Rural's top scorers, Cristina Lourenso and Emma Bradley, both average in the teens with their offense while the Blazers have speedy veteran guard Briar Roberts and Jill Lawless as their leaders.
At 4 p.m. the Colonel Gray #2 team and Morell men square off. The Colonels are led by veteran ball-handler and 20-points-per-game guard Matt Buell and Grade 11 guard Omaro Sefau's slashes to the hoop and three point shooting. Morell's Ethan Craig is the key to the offense and is the leading Marlin scorer, while Shane Pendergast works hard cleaning up the boards.
Bluefield #2 and Kinkora men get a chance to show their stuff at 8 p.m. The Bluefield Bobcats are led by ball-handler and hard-working defensive standout Isaac Dawson as well as Josh Gallant who makes his presence known under the hoop.
The Kinkora Blazers have "gym rat" and dedicated player Sam Milligan driving to the hoop and scoring from mid-range, Andrew McCormack shooting from long range and keying the defense, while big Brady vanderVelden controls the boards and has a nice finish around the hoop.
The medal games are Saturday also at Bluefield High.
