Miscouche girls take home silver, Englewood boys win bronze

SOURIS – The Stonepark Tigers and Morell Marlins captured the P.E.I. School Athletic Association midget A basketball championships at Souris Regional High School on Saturday afternoon.

The Stonepark girls outlasted the Miscouche Mustangs 23-15 in the girls’ gold-medal game, and Morell pulled out an exciting 52-48 win over the Souris Spartans in the boys’ championship game.

In the bronze-medal games, Souris defeated the Summerside Intermediate School Owls 24-17, and the Englewood Bulldogs trimmed the Kensington Torchmen 63-32.

Following is a look at the medal games:

Miscouche Mustangs 15

The girls’ final was a battle of the defences. The Tigers, who led 13-6 at halftime, swarmed the Mustangs defensively and three baskets put the game out of reach after Miscouche had closed to within 17-13 with 4:18 remaining.

Tournament all-stars Sam Silliphant (11), Chloe Paquet (5) and Molly Birtwhistle (3) were the top scorers for Stonepark.

Tournament most valuable player (MVP) Kelsey MacKinnon led the Mustangs with seven points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

Morell Marlins 52

Souris Spartans 48

The Marlins and Spartans clashed in the best game of the day that was not decided until the dying seconds.

Josh MacIntosh sank a three-pointer with 1:34 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the Spartans to within 49-47. However, a clutch hoop by Trent McSwain gave the Marlins a four-point lead with 1:21 left.

Randy Antle hit a foul shot with 25.3 seconds remaining to draw Souris to within three, and a three-point attempt just missed with 8.6 seconds showing on the clock. McSwain hit the clinching foul shot with 5.6 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.

McSwain, who was named the tournament MVP, finished with a team-high 14 points and 14 boards. Adam MacDonald (11), Carson van Diepen (9), Sam Stewart (8) and tournament all-star Dan Cousins (7) were Morell’s other top scorers.

McIntosh keyed the Spartans’ attack with a 20-point effort while Ryan Acorn had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Both were named to the tournament’s all-star team.

Kensington Torchmen 32

It was too much Isaac Cheverie and Tanner McKenna for the Torchmen.

Cheverie had 38 points and 18 rebounds while McKenna had 17 points and an outstanding 40 rebounds in leading the Bulldogs to the lopsided win.

For the Torchmen, Noah Rogerson had 13 points and Bailey Clark recorded 11.
