O’LEARY -- Jamie Newson has reeled off three wins in a row at the Curl P.E.I Provincial Mixed Curling Championship to advance to tonight’s 7 p.m. championship final at the Maple Leaf Curling Club.

Newson and his Charlottetown Curling Complex team of Vanessa Hamming, Andrew Robinson and Michelle MacIntyre, defeated the Tammy Dewar rink 6-3 in this afternoon’s semi-final to advance to the championship game against Mark MacDonald and his Cornwall Curling Club team of Shirley Barry, Brad Gardiner and Karen Currie. MacDonald secured a berth in the championship final by finishing first in round-robin play with a 5-1 record.

Newson, who lost his first game of the round-robin to MacDonald last Friday, scored an extra end victory in his final round-robin game on Monday to advance to a tie-breaker game just to have a chance at getting to today’s semi-final. He won the tie-breaker 9-2 Monday night over George Koke, picking up a game-ending five points in the sixth end.

Today, Newson opened with three in the first end, and that was the difference as Newson and Dewar traded singles the rest of the way. Newson ran Dewar out of rocks in the eighth end for the win.
