O’LEARY -- Mark MacDonald and his Cornwall Curling Club team of Shirley Berry, Brad Gardiner and Karen Currie have advanced to the championship final of the Curl P.E.I. Provincial Mixed Curling Championship. The MacDonald rink locked up first place in the seven-team round robin portion of the championship Monday afternoon at the Maple Leaf Curling Rink in O’Leary with an 8-6 win over O’Leary’s Clair Sweet rink. They pulled out seven points in two ends late in the game to earn their berth in the provincial final, finishing round robin play with a 5-1 (won-loss) record. Three teams finished tied for second with 4-2 records. As only the top three teams advance to the playoff round, a tie-breaker is needed to determine who will meet in the semi-final. Jamie Newson and his Charlottetown Curling Complex rink needed an extra end Monday afternoon to defeat Montague’s Larry Richard’s rink 6-5 and keep his playoff hopes alive. He will play Montague’s George Koke rink in a tie-breaker game tonight at 7 p.m. Koke defeated Bill Hope’s Cornwall/Silver Fox rink 5-4 in a game between two 3-2 teams. Hope finished at 3-3 and out of tie-breaker contention.

The winner of tonight’s tie-breaker will face the Tammy Dewar Montague/Maple Leaf/Charlottetown rink in tomorrow’s semi-final at 3 p.m. Winner of that game will face MacDonald in the 7 p.m. final, with a chance at advancing to the Canadian Mixed next November on the line.
