O’LEARY – After having the bye in the opening draw, Larry Richards wasted no time getting on the board during Draw 2 of the Curl P.E.I. provincial mixed curling championship here at the Maple Leaf Curling Club on Friday.

Allison Griffin, mate on the Clair Sweet rink, watches her shot during provincial mixed curling championship round-robin play Friday in O'Leary. There are draws scheduled for 10 a.m., 2:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Maple Leaf Curling Club.

Richards and his Montague Curling Club team counted five points in the first end of his evening game against clubmate George Koke. It turned out to be not enough, though, as Koke fought back for a 10-7 win, capped off by a steal of three in the extra end.

Koke, who scored seven points in the final two ends of a 9-7 win over O’Leary’s Clair Sweet rink in the afternoon draw, goes into Saturday’s round-robin play with a 2-0 (won-lost) record. Richards is 0-1.

The Tammy Dewar rink, representing Montague, Maple Leaf and Charlottetown clubs, also takes a  2-0 mark into  her Saturday morning (10 a.m.) game against Koke. Dewar, who skips the rink and throws first stone, stole two in the final end of her afternoon game against Bill Hope’s Cornwall/Silver Fox rink for a 6-4 win. She trailed Sweet 3-0 after two ends Friday evening, but stole eight points in four ends for a 9-3 win.

Hope drew even with a 6-4 win over Cornwall’s Mark MacDonald in the evening draw. MacDonald is also 1-1, having scored seven singles in a 7-6 extra-end win over Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson in the opening draw. Newson had the bye Friday evening.

There are round-robin draws on Saturday at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7 p.m., Sunday at 10 a.m., and 2:30 p.m.

The second- and third-place teams after the round robin will meet in a semifinal game, with the winner playing the round-robin champion for the right to represent P.E.I. at the Canadian mixed curling championship in North Bay, Ont., from Nov. 8 to 15.
