Amanda MacLean and Dennis Watts, third and second stones on the Tammy Dewar rink, sweep a Cody Dixon offering during fifth end action in the Provincial Mixed Curling Championship which got underway at the Maple Leaf Clurling Club in O'Leary Friday afternoon. A steal of two in the final end gave Dewar a 6-4 win over Bill Hope.
O’LEARY -- Tammy Dewar, George Koke and Mark MacDonald picked up victories in the opening draw of the Curl P.E.I. Provincial Mixed curling championship at the Maple Leaf Curling Club here this afternoon. Dewar, whose team includes curlers from the Montague, Maple Leaf and Charlottetown Curling Clubs, stole a deuce in the final end for a 6-4 victory over Bill Hope’s Cornwall/Silver Fox rink.
Koke and his Montague Curling rink team scored seven points in the final two ends, including a steal of four in the eighth end for a 9-7 win over Clair Sweet’s rink from the host club, and Mark MacDonald and his Cornwall rink scored singles in seven ends, including five steals, for a 7-6 extra end victory over the Jamie Newson rink from Charlottetown.
The Larry Richards rink from Montague will see its first action in tonight’s 7 p.m. draw.
Seven teams are entered in the single round robin championship. The top three teams at the end of the round robin advance to the play-off round with the first place team going directly to the final. The winning rink advances to the Canadian Mixed November 8 to 15 in North Bay, Ontario. There will be a new champion crowned this year as the defending champion Rod MacDonald rink is not entered
There are draws Saturday at 10 a.m.2:30 and 7 p.m. and the final round robin draws go Sunday at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
