SUMMERSIDE – The P.E.I. School Athletic Association midget basketball playoffs got underway on Thursday.
West zone semifinals were held, with the winners advancing to their respective provincial championship tournaments next weekend. The AA championships will be held at Summerside Intermediate School, with Souris hosting the A championships.
Following is a look at Thursday’s games:
Midget AA Girls
Summerside Intermediate Owls 53
M.E. Callaghan Cougars 26
At Summerside Intermediate, the No. 2-seeded Owls jumped out to a 32-10 lead at halftime, but the Cougars, led by eight consecutive points by Martine Gallant, attempted to close the gap in the third quarter.
Gallant finished with 11 points and Rickilee MacLeod had nine for Callaghan, which went into the playoffs seeded third.
Callie MacDonald (19), Georgia Baker (12) and Georgie McKenna (10) were the leading offensive producers for the Owls.
Midget AA boys
Summerside Intermediate Owls 55
Hernewood Huskies 28
Just like the Summerside Intermediate girls, the host and top-seeded Owls built a comfortable halftime lead – 33-8.
Logan Cameron’s strong defensive player set the tone for the Owls, and they never looked back.
Logan MacDougall led all scorers for the Owls with 15 points. James Sanchez added seven points, and six other Owls scored.
MacKenzie Brennan’s eight-point effort was tops for fourth-seeded Hernewood.
Midget A Girls
Summerside Intermediate Owls 43
M.E. Callaghan Cougars 24
At Summerside Intermediate, the top-seeded Owls opened the game with 10 straight points en route to a 24-11 advantage at the half.
Grace Fisher controlled the Owls’ offence by scoring 16 points, and Abby Malayny contributed 12. Jordan Connell played a strong game for the No. 1-seeded Owls, grabbing numerous rebounds.
Kamryn Shea finished with 12 points to lead the Cougars, who were seeded fourth.
Miscouche Mustangs 39
Englewood Bulldogs 33
At Miscouche Consolidated, the host Mustangs pulled out a close victory between the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.
Englewood led 22-20 at halftime, but the Mustangs surged ahead in the third quarter and took a 29-24 cushion into the final eight minutes. Englewood used a 6-0 run to close within three points with five minutes remaining.
Kelsey MacKinnon of the Mustangs hit a free throw to start a 7-0 run for Miscouche, which then held off an aggressive Englewood offence in the last three minutes of the game.
Racheal Steele (14), MacKinnon (12) and Raylee DesRoches (7) were Miscouche’s top point-getters.
For Englewood, MacKenzie Stewart (9), Madison Vincent (8) and Kennedy LeGrange (8) led the way.
Midget A Boys
Kensington Torchmen 76
Summerside Intermediate Owls 62
At Kensington Intermediate-Senior High (KISH), the host and No. 1-seeded Torchmen outlasted the No. 4-seeded Owls in a high-scoring affair.
The Torchmen grabbed an early lead, and led the Owls by as many as 14 points in the second quarter. SIS cut that to 39-31 at the break, but a 10-0 run to start the third quarter put the Torchmen back in control.
Bailey Clark and Noah Rogerson each poured in 20 points to lead the Torchmen, who received a 15-point effort from Clark Webster.
Reid MacBeath, who scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, ignited the Owls’ offence. Jonathan Rose chipped in with 19 points and Randy Corkum had nine.
