SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside Capitals clinched first place in the P.E.I. Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League on Thursday night.

The Capitals took a one-point lead into a showdown with the second-place Western Maroons, and Summerside prevailed 5-2. With Summerside now up by three points and the Maroons having only one regular-season game remaining, it guarantees the Caps home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs and a first-round bye.

At Eastlink Arena, Brodie MacArthur (2), Tyson Arsenault, Tayler Read and Noah Dobson scored for the Capitals.

Alex Morrissey and Diego LeClair answered for the O’Leary-based Maroons.

The teams were tied 2-2 after the first period, and the Caps took a 3-2 lead into the dressing room after two periods.

Winning goaltender Evan Richard stopped 18 of 20 shots. Luke Oliver turned aside 15 of 19 shots for the Maroons. Summerside’s fifth goal came into an empty net.
