Falcons surprise Sabres in Game 1

BELFAST – The Sherwood Falcons proved on Friday night that the playoffs are a brand new season.

The Falcons, who won just three regular-season games and finished in seventh place, upset the second-place Belfast Sabres 3-2 in the opening game of the best-of-five quarter-final series in the Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League on Friday night.

Joseph Ready’s goal with 15:20 remaining in the third period broke a 2-2. Jake MacLean scored the first two goals for the Falcons.

Jack Panting and Cody Garnhum answered for the Sabres, who led 1-0 after the first period and trailed 2-1 following 40 minutes.

Winning goaltender was Steve Lannigan. Jason Whiteway tended goal for Belfast.

The Falcons will host Game 2 at the Cody Banks Arena on Monday at 8:35 p.m.
