CHARLOTTETOWN – Volleyball player Emily Caldwell and hockey goaltender Matt Derry have been selected as the Holland College Hurricanes’ athletes of the week for the week ending Feb. 2.
Caldwell, a middle player from Hartland, N.B., helped the Hurricanes earn their first Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) win of the season against the Mount Allison Mounties.
Caldwell had 15 digs, eight kills, two service aces and no errors in the match as the Hurricanes won a five-set thriller at home.
In two matches against the Université Sainte Anne Dragons, Caldwell had 10 kills and six digs in the first match and eight kills and 14 digs in the second match.
Caldwell is a second-year medical assisting student.
Derry, who is from Stratford and is a first-year sport and leisure management student, recorded the Hurricanes’ first shutout since the team was formed in 2010. Derry stopped 25 shots in a 5-0 win over the Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons on Saturday night.
Derry also played a large part in the Hurricanes’ 4-3 overtime win over the Montague Maniacs on Monday night. Derry stopped 42 of 45 shots against the Island Junior Hockey League’s (IJHL) second-place team.
In 20 games this season – the second-most of any goaltender in the IJHL – Derry has posted a 4.81 goals-against average – third amongst goaltenders who have played more than 10 games.
