Island grapplers continue to get podium finishes

CHARLOTTETOWN – Island senior wrestlers continue to have great showings on the mat, winning more medals at events across the country in recent weeks.

Winsloe’s Veronica Keefe, who wrestles for Concordia University, added two more gold to her season’s collection with a win in the 82-kilogram category at the Queen’s Open, and followed this up with a win in the 72-kilogram class in the Western Open this past weekend. Keefe also recently placed third at the Guelph Open in a very competitive 72-kilogram division.

Charlottetown’s Trevor Banks continued his fine season at Concordia by posting an excellent first-showing place in the 54-kilogram category at Queen’s.

Meanwhile, Lorena Ellis, wrestling for the New Brunswick Black Bear club in Fredericton, N.B., while attending St Thomas University, has had two fourth-place finishes recently in 67 kilograms at Queen’s and Western. Ellis was also recently recognized with the prestigious Bob MacLeod Scholarship Award in recognition of her fine 2013 season.

The next major event for the Island wrestling contingent will be the CIS championships in Fredericton the weekend of Feb. 28.
